Merry Christmas and Ice Storm 2013

I'm just stopping in to share some photos of our ice storm.

We started getting freezing rain late last week and all weekend. Our whole town and surrounding areas had power outages. Our neighbourhood lost hydro for a day but lots of areas in town are still without power after four days. The sun came out yesterday and I took some not great iphone photos.

The ice would be pretty if not for the damage. There is a lot of tree damage in our neighbourhood but even more shocking is the loss of mature trees in older areas of town. These photos are from yesterday, and we have had fresh snow and colder temperatures since then.

My nephew and his family live across town and have been staying with us because their hydro is still out. Even worse is that Mike slipped on the concrete steps at their home and cracked some ribs. They are hooking up a generator today so their girls can have Christmas morning at home.

The stories we are hearing of neighbours staying with other families, offering showers and meals, and moving seniors to warming stations shows the kindness that exists. Living without the luxuries for a day or more makes one appreciate the conveniences we have that much more. With last minute shopping not so much a priority it was fun to take the time to show my young great nieces how to knit and stitch. It kept them occupied too.

We will be enjoying this Christmas Eve surrounded by family. Wishing you and your loved ones a Merry Christmas!

  6. My son was sharing some stories he heard about the ice storms. I am so sorry that there was some damage in your area.

It was hot in our part of the US so it didn't even feel like Christmas.

    Hope all is well now.

  7. Oh, that was such a nasty storm and I'm glad things are pretty well back to normal now. I think here in NB the last of the customers just got their power back yesterday! It was almost 2 weeks without power for them. Awful! It sure makes one appreciate the everyday things like water and heat. Pam
